This week's letter reminded me of our pledge, so I hereby dutifully reprint it.

The DOMAI pledge

I hereby promise:

  1. never to my willful knowledge let a beautiful girl pass without enjoying the sight.
  2. never to speak slightingly of or underestimate the importance of beauty and grace, and always support it in conversation when needed.
  3. to keep beauty near my heart and always be aware that it is what is keeping us happy and content, and much of what makes life worth living.
  4. never to let merely intellectual pursuits, important as they may be, distract me for any undue length of time.
  5. to keep in mind that beauty is a spiritual thing, no more and no less.
  6. to always keep a pure mind when seeing beauty, or, failing that, at least take pleasure thinking what I am thinking.
  7. to remember that seeing is the only form of having that is actual. Thus, what you can see you can have. The reason for possessing anything is to prevent others from having it too, a pointless exercise.
  8. to not be bothered when they go away. There will always be more.
  9. to enjoy life and what it has given me, and in return to support life and be constructive.

Letters to Domai

The bottom line is, if you believe in a God having created all things (except for evil, which is our own doing and a normal consequence of the free choice He gave us), then you'll also believe that God created pleasure and beauty. And since you have to be human to understand gratuitous beauty, surely when you admire it you are, consciously or not, paying tribute to its author. If saying "God is almighty" is a prayer, then undoubtedly saying "creation is beautiful", meaning "God's work is splendid", is also a form of prayer, it's just expressed differently. The grace of a cat, the perfume of a flower, a fiery setting sun, the laughter of a child, the smile of a beautiful woman... or her body, for that instance, how better to thank God for creating beauty and giving us life than to draw innocent happiness from this beauty?

Now, a small word about the "nudity-and-sex" couple. It's already been said and repeated millions of times, they're not identical. It's extremely hard to get turned on by the hundreds of full-frontal naked women (many of them young and pretty) in Schindler's List when you expect them to be gassed to death any second. And a lot of sex scenes (or actual sex) happen without disrobing, that's no scoop.

In any case, God didn't give us sexual impulses just to "make us wriggle", as Al Pacino said in The Devil's Advocate. Sexuality is not only agreeable to us, it is beautiful too. We just need to make reasonable use of it. Just like appetite shouldn't degenerate into gluttony. Yes, sometimes, for all their innocent beauty, I may get turned on by a Domai girl. If I never did, they should probably have every right to be offended! The female body carries both beauty and sexuality. And so does the male body. How could we "grow and multiply" if Mom and Dad didn't cuddle very deeply? It's the condition for our very existence! God wanted it that way, He made Nature. He just didn't tell us to all go in a rampaging orgy of r-a-p-e and adultery frenzy, this is why He also gave us common sense and innate morals so we could be discerning.
